New Yorkers Will Be Able to Pay Internet Bills – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – New York can move forward with a law requiring Internet service providers to offer discounted rates to low-income people, a federal court ruled on Sunday. Friday.

The decision by the Second Circuit Court of the US Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan overturned a 2021 lower court decision that blocked the law just days before it took effect.

The law would force Internet companies to offer broadband services to some low-income New Yorkers for as little as $15 a month, or face fines from the state.

Telecommunications industry groups sued the law, arguing that it would cost too much money and that it changed federal laws governing Internet services.

On Friday, industry groups said they were weighing their next legislation.

“We are disappointed by the court’s decision and New York State’s move to control costs in the competitive economy. Not only does it hinder the necessary investment in our country’s agenda, it also has the potential to affect the stability of our country’s broadband in many areas,” read a statement.

New York state lawmakers passed the law in 2021 as part of the budget, and supporters argued that the law would give low-income people access to to the internet, which has become important.
