In 2022, Colombia will reach nearly 50 million Internet connections

Recognizing the importance of the Internet and its important role in the field of communication as an important tool to promote the growth and development of the country, the People’s Committee Control Communications (CRC), Regulatory Authority of the ICT, Postal and Audiovisual sectors, celebrated worldwide. The change of these services in the country responds to the change of activities, as well as the public policy and administrative management in order to facilitate the expansion of the Internet, with the aim that the benefits of this service reach users in every corner of Colombia. .

In December 2022, mobile Internet connections reached 40.11 million, with a growth of 5.7% compared to 2021. 4G technology penetrated 85.3% of the total, reaching 34.2 million when the end of 2022, when 2G and 3G access presents a negative difference of 24.9% in the same period.

In the case of secure Internet services, in December 2022 the connection reached 8.89 million, which is equivalent to 440 thousand users more compared to 2021, with a major growth of 5.2%. 89.7% of fixed Internet usage is indoor.

29.4% of fixed internet access is supported by fiber optics, and home access based on this type of connection is reported in 730 cities in the country.

For the month of December 2022, the penetration of the mobile phone service is 77.7 per 100 inhabitants, while the Internet clinic has reached 51.3 per 100 homes, which represents an increase of 3.3 and 1.2 percentage points respectively compared to 2021.

  • Income from providing services:

Internet revenue (fixed and mobile) exceeded $15 billion in 2022, showing an increase of 7.1% compared to 2021.
In the mobile Internet, revenue will reach $8.70 trillion in 2022, presenting an increase of 9.3% compared to 2021, while fixed Internet revenue is expected to grow by 4.2% in 2022, up to $6.45 trillion.
Mobile Internet traffic:

The average traffic from a mobile Internet is 7.8 Gigabyte in the last month of 2022, which is equal to 45.3% more compared to 2021. For the fourth quarter of 2022, tag a total of 910 million was recorded at GB.

Regarding the use of the Internet, the study “The role of OTT services in communication in Colombia” published by the CRC shows a wide range of preferences for ownership and use of Over The Top (OTT) services, which They are. which allow the transmission of content such as audio, video and text on the Internet, during the year 2022, with their changes and their relationship with communication services in Colombia. Some of the most important findings are:

  • Audiovisual content platforms

42% of Colombians use multiple platforms to access audiovisual content, and the most used are:

– Netflix, with 28%
– YouTube, with 17% (in 2018 this is the favorite platform with 38%)

Among 42% of platform users:

– 38% do not watch national TV
– 26% use them to watch movies
– 20% use them to watch movies

The percentage of households that have canceled their television service because they have an application to access audiovisual content has increased from 1.9% in 2021 to 4% in 2022.

– 65% of Colombians call from their mobile phone using both operator and online applications
– 28% call only from operator
– 7% only made from applications.

The percentage of people calling by request increased from 49% in 2018 to 60% in 2022.

By 2022, 42% of people report that they have reduced the number of calls from a traditional operator; Of these, 46% do so because they like to talk. This fact allows us to conclude that sending more messages to a request is related to calls less than a normal worker.

77% of Colombians report having stopped receiving text messages (SMS) from their operator to do so through applications in the last 12 months.

The percentage of people who send instant messages through applications has increased from 60% in 2018 to 64% in 2022.

WhatsApp is still the most used application for calling or video calling (98%) and sending instant messages by Colombians (99%).

Other applications used to send messages are:

– Facebook Messenger, mostly used by people under the age of 46
– Instagram talk by people under the age of 36
– Snapchat and Discord by people under the age of 26.
